In the footage which emerged yesterday, Mr Erdogan can be seen stepping out of a car and watching on from a distance as his security personnel allegedly attacked Kurdish and Armenian protesters outside the ambassador of Turkey’s residence in the US capital.
Nine people were hurt and two arrests were made during the altercation, which occurred during the controversial Turkish leader’s meeting with Donald Trump on Wednesday.
From The Express
Witnesses claim the the scuffle broke out when the Turkish president’s security attacked protesters carrying the flag of the Kurdish PYD party outside the residence.
In the video Mr Erdogan can be seen watching the clash before turning around and then walking away.
Initial reports had claimed the Turkish president had been inside the residence at the time.
Additional footage of the violent incident showed men in suits kicking protesters as officers from Washington DC’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) attempted to break up the fight.
Lucy Usoyan, a Yazidi Kurd demonstrator, told ABC: “All of the sudden they just ran towards us.
“Someone was beating me in the head nonstop, and I thought, ‘Ok, I’m on the ground already, what is the purpose to beat me?’”
Erdogan’s security may go unpunished over the incident after a MPD chief revealed a “diplomatic immunity issue” could make it impossible to make any arrests.
Earlier President Trump and president Erdogan promised to strengthen ties between their two nations, despite the Turkish leader’s stern warning about Washington’s arming of Kurdish militias.
President Erdogan said: “It is absolutely unacceptable to take the YPG-PYD into consideration as partners in the region and it’s against a global agreement we reached.
“In the same way, we should never allow those groups who want to change the ethnic or religious structures in the region to use terrorism as a pretext.”
