A three-judge panel on the federal appeals court decided last week to keep the block in place as the merits of Trump’s ban on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries move through lower courts. On Thursday, Trump blasted the federal appeals court during his first solo press conference of his presidency.
“That circuit is in chaos,” Trump said of the 9th Circuit. “And that circuit is frankly in turmoil. But we are appealing that and we are going further. We’re issuing a new executive action next week that will comprehensively protect our country.
“So we’ll be going along the one path and hopefully winning that time at the same time we will be issuing a new and very comprehensive order to protect our people.”
The 9th Circuit set a Thursday deadline for both parties in the case to file briefs about whether they think a fuller review, called “en banc,” is needed. Whether the federal appeals court will conduct a full review of the blockade of Trump’s immigration ban before the president takes additional executive actions on the matter is not clear.
