House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was perilously close to death when he arrived at a Washington, DC, hospital after being shot in the hip at a practice for a congressional baseball game.

“When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death,” Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said during a press conference Friday afternoon.
While the congressman was still awake just after the shooting, he went into “shock” as he was transported via helicopter to the hospital, Sava said.
Scalise is still in critical condition and faces several more operations, but doctors are “encouraged” by his progress.
“[We’ve] controlled the internal bleeding, and [his] vital signs have stabilized,” Sava said.
“I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility,” he added.
The doctor predicted that Scalise, who has “hundreds” of bullet fragments in his body, will have to remain in the hospital for “weeks” but will eventually be able to walk and “hopefully run.”
“Once we get through a few more days, we might be able to prognosticate a little better,” Sava said.
Scalise and several others were wounded when left-wing zealot James Hodgkinson, 66, opened fire early Wednesday on the GOP congressional baseball team as they were practicing at a field in Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia.
