Michelle Obama is not happy that the federal government won’t get in the way of schoolchildren “eating crap.”
From Daily Caller
The former first lady criticized the Trump administration on Friday for rolling back regulations that policed the healthiness of federally-subsidized school lunches. Among other things, the new rules relax restrictions on sodium content and allow schools to serve 1 percent flavored milk instead of forcing students to drink skim milk.
“You have to stop and think, ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you and why is that a partisan issue? Why would that be political?’” Obama said at a health conference, referencing the Trump administration’s rule changes.
“Moms, think about this. I don’t care what state you live in. take me out of the equation, like me, don’t like me, but think about why someone is OK with your kids eating crap,” she continued.
Some of the assumptions underlying the Obama administration’s health rules — such as that sodium content should be kept low and nonfat milk is better than whole milk — have come under fire in recent years.
A study released last year found that consumers of whole-fat dairy had a 46 percent lower risk of diabetes than people who avoided dairy fats.
“I think these findings together with those from other studies do call for a change in the policy of recommending only low-fat dairy products,” Time Magazine quoted Tufts University cardiologist Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, one of the authors of the study, as saying. “There is no prospective human evidence that people who eat low-fat dairy do better than people who eat whole-fat dairy.”
Similarly, a 2014 study called into question the federal government’s longstanding advice to avoid consuming high levels of sodium.
“There is no longer any valid basis for the current salt guidelines,” McMaster University professor Andrew Mente, one of the authors of that study, told The Washington Post. “So why are we still scaring people about salt?”
